Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. All compression happens inside your browser tab. Your document never leaves your device. The page even works offline once loaded — we have no server that could receive your file.

What is the difference between "Optimize" and "Rasterize"?

Optimize compresses the PDF's internal structure and object streams without changing the content — text stays selectable, links still work, and file quality is identical. It typically reduces size by 5–25%. Rasterize re-draws every page as a JPEG image and rebuilds the PDF from those images. Text is no longer selectable or searchable, but files can shrink by 60–90%. Use Rasterize only when you must hit a strict upload size limit.

Why does rasterizing make text non-selectable?

Rasterization converts each page into a flat image — like taking a screenshot. The resulting PDF contains only pixels, so there is no text layer for your PDF viewer to select. If you need the text to remain selectable, use Optimize mode instead.

What if the file is still too large after compression?

If Optimize mode does not hit your target, try Rasterize mode and pick a smaller target size. Very large PDFs that are already mostly images (e.g. scanned documents) cannot be compressed much further without significantly reducing visual quality.

Does this work with password-protected PDFs?

No. Password-protected PDFs cannot be loaded or modified without the password. Please remove the password using your PDF application first, then compress here.
